About Us
Seven Berliners, one idea: the capital’s first standing wave. That’s how Wellenwerk came to be, and that’s still what it stands for today.
Our story
Wellenwerk was founded by seven friends from Berlin, united by one thing: their love of surfing. On the old grounds of the Berlin waterworks, they spent over three years building Berlin’s first standing wave, right in the middle of Lichtenberg, independent of wind, weather, and season.
The old warehouse was fully renovated rather than rebuilt from scratch, and the extension is built mostly from wood. The hall runs on CO₂-neutral green electricity from hydropower and its own heat recovery system. Sustainability was part of the concept from day one, not added on afterward. Since June 2025 the site also has its own surfskate bowl: surfing on four wheels, with taster courses and rental boards available on site.

What we stand for
There’s no room at Wellenwerk for homophobia, fascism, sexism, racism, or hate. Wellenwerk sees itself as an open place for anyone who wants to surf, from your first stand on the board to pro-level training.
For the team, surfing isn’t just a sport, it’s the whole reason Wellenwerk exists in the first place. You’ll find open positions and speculative applications on the jobs page.
We make waves
Since 2018, Wellenwerk has partnered with wirmachenwelle e. V., founded by big-wave surfer Sebastian Steudtner. The initiative combines youth social work with sport: the goal is to give socially disadvantaged young people new perspectives and more self-confidence through sport and nature.
Wellenwerk also supports ecological projects beyond its own operations through tree-planting campaigns, including in the Uckermark region and in Mexico.
The nonprofit surf program for children and young people now continues independently under Wellenkids.
